In-Depth Analysis & Discerning Insight

for Remarkable Thinkers, Creators, and Leaders

I partner with small business owners, creators, academics, and organizations to rethink pressing challenges and devise strategies for moving forward. I’m at my best when I integrate deep listening with strategic insight and practical application.

The projects I work on often include business strategy, business model development, editorial planning, product development, messaging & marketing, or curriculum development.

Tara McMullin, strategist, writer, producer

I’ve worked with small business owners, creators, and leaders for over 17 years. I’m known for prioritizing fundamentals over flashy tactics, nuanced analysis over easy answers, and sustainability over profit for profit’s sake.

Beyond the wide variety of businesses I’ve worked on with clients over the years, I have personal experience with an array of business models and offers:

  • coaching and consulting

  • group coaching and mastermind programs

  • training and licensing program

  • membership community

  • micro media business (newsletter and podcast)

  • productized services (podcast production)

I’m the author of What Works: A Comprehensive Framework to Change the Way We Approach Goal-Setting, and my work has been published in Fast Company, The Muse, and Toastmasters Magazine.

Coaching & Strategy Options

There are a few different ways to work with me, from a one-off strategy session to longer-term coaching to interactive programs. If you don’t see a fit for your project below, but you believe I’m a good fit, please reach out!

  • Work with me one-on-one in a 90-minute session for laser-focused coaching and insight. More information below.

  • Spend 12-16 weeks working toward a particular objective (e.g., redesigning your business model, launching a new content strategy, designing a curriculum, etc.). Includes synchronous and asynchronous support. More information below.

  • An 8-week interactive workshop for creating remarkable media that helps others make sense of the world (also available as a 1:1 project). More information here.

  • A flexible, lightweight container for exploring big ideas through speculative fiction and cultural theory—program announcements are typically in May of each year.

A few things to know about me:

  • Politically, I’m a radical feminist and anti-capitalist, so my approach to business-building reflects those commitments and focuses on sustainability and reducing harm rather than maximizing output.

  • I’m an autodidact with formal training in religious studies and many years of informal training in critical theory, economics, philosophy, and systems analysis.

  • I’m autistic, which means my skills for pattern recognition, perspective-taking, and talking at length about various topics of interest are very high. I am also equal parts charismatic and awkward.

  • I am a science fiction nerd who is extremely skeptical of the artificial intelligence industry. I’m not anti-AI, but I do believe the current use cases for generative and agentic AI are much narrower than what’s being advertised. I’m not a good fit for AI-forward projects.

Insight Intensive

In this 90-minute session that addresses a single challenge, goal, or question, I’ll help you explore your options and formulate next steps.

You submit initial questions and background information ahead of the session so I can prepare a laser-focused session for you. After the session, I’ll follow up with your recording, transcript, and notes.

The session fee is $500. After you’ve purchased your session, you’ll receive instructions for scheduling and submitting your intake questionnaire.

Remarkable Projects

If you have a challenge, idea, or goal that requires more support than a single session, I also offer project-based coaching. We’ll determine the scope of the project, its timeframe, and the level of support you need. Typically, projects last about 12-16 weeks, and support is split between synchronous and asynchronous communication.

Coaching and strategy projects often focus on product/service development, business model design, content strategy, or messaging.

I’m also available for more hands-on writing projects (e.g., ebooks, script writing, and manuals) on a limited basis.
